THE VICOL PARK - THE SECOND CENTRE OF THE RESORT

The Herculane Baths were discovered by the Romans, then rediscovered by the Austrians and modernized by the Romanians by creating the new balneal-tourist centre in Vicol Park, named after the father of the Romanian balneology, General N. Vicol.

The balneal-tourism centre is distinguished by the unique architecture of the three vermillion towers of the Diana, Aphrodite and Minerva hotels, profiled on the white and brilliant steep mountain of Domogled (1,106 m) and the two vessel-type hotels, Dacia and Domogled.

The Aphrodite Spa Compound was reopened in July 2012 and welcomes you with a new image and a delightful design. The hotel was put into operation in 1979 and bears the name of the goddess of love and beauty, the daughter of Zeus.

Now, the hotel has 220 mountain-view rooms spread over 14 levels and a restaurant with two saloons: Premier Restaurant with 450 seats and Labyrinth Restaurant with 250 seats.

The Aphrodite Wellness Centre offers a “treat for deities” to escape from the stress of modern life and enter into an oasis of tranquillity and relaxation where everything that matters is only your person. The atmosphere, treatment and natural curative effects will make you feel reborn.

The Diana balneal-tourism Compound was released to the public in December 2011 and uses the water of the Traian Spring, located on the left bank of Cerna, next to the Red Bridge. This thermal-sulphur water stream has the most constant chemical composition of all the thermo mineral springs in Herculane Baths. The hotel was entered into service in 1977 and bears the name of the goddess of hunting, forest and moon.

Currently, the hotel has 220 rooms, of which half are fully upgraded, ingeniously furnished, and the other half is partially modernised.

The Diana spa centre is ideal for rest, relaxation and for maintenance and anti-aging treatments. Here you will feel thoroughly taken care of, having the feeling of “eternal youth and life without illness.”

The Minerva spa resort will be reopened soon. The hotel dates back to 1985, bearing the name of the goddess of wisdom, the protector of science, arts and crafts. The tower construction is unique in regarding its architecture, and the treatment base was endowed with stainless steel baths in the past.

The Dacia-Domogled spa complex is in a period of modernization, being the base for rest and treatment of the trade unions in Romania.

The Domogled Hotel was the first spa building in Vicol Park, put into operation in 1973. The Dacia Hotel, a vessel-type construction, was commissioned in 1982, being the hotel with the highest number of places (1100) at that time.
Although no one writes about the 70s and 80s anymore, unique in the development of the resort, the entire modern spa compound of Vicol Park, built between 1973-1985, is built according to the project of the architects belonging to the Muresan family. The buildings outline even today an architectural personality very well-known by everyone. Contrary to the rumours nowadays, all the new hotels in Herculane Baths (Roman, Hercules, Domogled, Dacia, Aphrodite, Minerva and Diana) were made at a very high quality “, claims with his well-known seriousness Mr. Hans Johann Chladni, who has been the builder and general contractor for 25 years (1965-1990) at this great project of the resort.

The International Spa Treatment Centre is the most suitable place for groups of 25-30 tourists who would like to have a meal to their liking, as well as accommodation in 12 double rooms and 7 suites for a desired family comfort. Distinguished with the title of “The Most Fashionable Tourist Compound in Banat”, the International Hotel tries to revive the spirit of the former resort and offers balneal treatment and Spa through top – level services, courtesy and hospitality. You can take sulphur-rich water baths, with always fresh and clean waters, in a 30 m2 pool and wrapping with grapes, green tea, chocolate and ginger. You can benefit from: relaxing massages, reflexology, Shiatsu massage, detoxification, Jacuzzi and underwater showers.

In the middle of Vicol Park is the Outdoor Theatre of the resort. Here the main events of the resort are held: “Hercules” International Folklore Festival, The “black pine tree” festival from Banat and Banat ‘s Slivovitz Festival.

If you look for the General N.Vicol’s bust in the resort, you should know that it is now located in the old centre of the resort, next to Elisabeth’s Villa. It was erected in 1936, being the work of the sculptor Ion Dimitriu-Barlad. Perhaps that is why it should be a good idea to consider the proposal to move the bust into the park that bears his name, and to restore in its place the statue of Empress Elizabeth (Sisi). Empress Elizabeth had indeed a statue in the Herculane Baths, but it was broken by the outsiders and “buried” in a home foundation.

The Herculane Baths Resort, whatever the times, is always fresh, always different. In clear mornings, the valley near the resort is bathed in great light, contrasting with the shadows of the giant walls. On the same limestone walls, in the late days of autumn, the bleeding purple of the smoke tree lights up on the cliffs, burning for days, sometimes brightlier, sometimes more faded. In the moonlit nights, the shadows are more mysterious, and down, along the valley, the silver steam of the Cerna River is weaved in fine tinsel.

Herculane was and remains a gem of Banat grace to the “continuous murmur of springs, this is the most alluring wealth of the Herculane Baths”, according to Carol Tatartzy, the administrator of the resort and the builder of the Elisabeth’s Villa (Sisi) in 1875. [Tatartzy C., 1888].

That is why we invite you to look for the thermal springs in Herculane Baths and, through the proposed theme park, to listen to the wonderful stories of those who have been cured in their healing waters:

Theme Park no. 5. THE NATURE’S SPECTACLE:

                                          The healing waters of Herculane
                                                   HEALTH AND JOY

To the question “What kind of spa treatment can be done at Herculane?” most of the times the answer is that the resort has a well-defined destination: a spa treatment with sulphur thermal water for rheumatic diseases.

However the thermal sulphurous streams and the thermo-saline springs of Hercules have healing waters for a wide range of conditions, thermal waters which, long before they were analysed, had already been named by the people : the foot bath, the eye bath, the fever bath, the women’s bath, etc.

The main therapeutic agent of the thermal-sulphur water in Herculane Baths is the thermal sulphur, being a soluble sulphur dissolved in deep thermal waters.

The origin of the thermal mineral waters strung across the Cerna Valley on a length of 4 km, from the Seven Hot Springs, upstream, and downstream to the Eye Spring, is not fully elucidated.

Basically, according to Prof. Ph.D. Ilie Cristescu: “The meteoric and flowing water infiltrates through the rocks ‘breaches, in the northwest of the resort. Penetrating to depths between 1000 and 2000 m, the waters come in contact with the Cerna’s longitudinal igneous fault. Then, the water flows towards the south, at great depth and at low speed and it gets mixed with the formation water or the vapours emission, being thus strongly heated (up to 190 degrees Celsius) and mineralized. In the favourable areas offered by the three transversal faults located near the Seven Hot Springs, the Hercules Spring and the Hebe-Diana Spring, the waters rise to the surface under the form of springs. The mineralization of thermal waters is due both to the dissolution of the soluble components from the rocks, as well as to the intake of deposit waters. [Cristescu I., 2012].

In the Herculane Baths resort there are 20 thermal springs, of which, 10 thermal springs are in use today.

These springs have a relatively constant flow rate, a high degree of mineralization (3-6 g / l) and a temperature up to 62 degrees Celsius, most of the waters having between 35 and 45 degrees Celsius, and the waters that cross the border from the place called “Seven Hot Springs” are the most radioactive waters from the country. Whereas the degree of mineralization of thermo mineral waters increases from north to south, the chemical composition varies from spring to spring.

One of the characteristic elements of the thermal waters in Herculane Baths is the hydrogen sulphide in concentrations up to 60 mg / l. Therefore, the characteristic smell of the sulphurous emanations can be felt everywhere.

The current thermal water reserve of the Herculane Baths resort is 4,000 m³ in 24 hours, offering a great variety of spa treatments.

According to the place of occurrence, the chemical composition and degree of radioactivity, the thermo-mineral springs in Herculane Baths are divided into five groups:

  • Group I: Seven Springs

The miracle of Hercule’s thermal waters is created by a tellurian chemistry, through which infiltrated waters of meteoric origin penetrate in the depths, they heat up from the hot rocks located in the deepness (1-2 km) and appear at the surface rich in the minerals they wash on their way through the underground, a process that bestows them with healing powers.

Look for them in the Cerna Valley and you will feel that the climate is soft and unchanging here, the air is very clean and the fresh water from the Domogled mountain spring tastes the best. At Herculane Baths, the region, very rich in beauty and in wild romanticism, influences the body and the mood of the visitor, even without taking a bath in the thermal waters.

If you are going to have a bath cure too, then the written or oral stories about the miracle of recovery and healing of the thermal waters of Herculane will not be just legends anymore.

At the time of the Romans, an ill person, completely stiff because of rheumatism, came to Hercule’s thermal baths, not being able to stand neither on his feet nor in his crutches. Following the treatment, his health improved, succeeding to stand up three weeks later, by the help of crutches, and after two months of bathing he could stand and walk without help.

During the Austrian period, Francisco Griselini writes in his work “History of Timiş Banat that “the inhabitants around the baths used them with the highest confidence as a treatment for various diseases.[Griselini Fr, transl. 1926]. People stood in the hot water of the “holes” on the bank of the Cerna for 1-2 hours, wrapped themselves in their cloaks, sweated and slept under the open sky until the next day when they bathed again, ate and then left for their homes. This faith in the beneficial water of the springs from the Cerna Valley has been transmitted among people from generation to generation and it can be seen even today on the banks of the Cerna river where, whether it is summer or winter, year after year, thousands of people prefer this method of treatment in nature, with hot baths, right in the “holes” of the Seven Springs or near the Roman Hotel, after which the most courageous throw themselves into the cold, mountain water of the river.

At the Venera Bath or the French Bath, named for its curative powers in the healing of venereal diseases or infertility, women from all over the world came to treat themselves with vaginal irrigation and baths at 36⁰ C and they left being cured.

An old man of the Danube Shore was caught by the 1944 events on the Russian front. He was 34 years old. In the autumn of that year, he was caught by the rain several times, at nights in the trenches, where he had to stand motionless; on the brink of winter he used to sleep with his comrades in tents, where only his head was inside the tent, the rest of the body being out, waking up with his body almost frosted and frozen. That is how he got sick of rheumatic ankylosis not being able to walk anymore. He had the chance to be taken by his wife to the baths in Herculane, where he met a balneologist who told him: “Banat native, I will get you well, you have thermal waters here in the Herculane Baths that are superior to any healing waters from Europe!. With two cures a year, after 12 years, he completely recovered due to the spa treatment.

A beautiful 20-year-old girl in the 90’s received a car for her birthday party and the first time she took a ride in it she suffered a car accident. Because of the cervical spinal cord injury, she suffered a tetraparesis and cervical fracture. Although she came late (after a year and a half after the accident) to the baths, thanks to the unique “recovery” treatment practiced in Herculane Baths, applied by Professor Ion Gruia, a recognized world-class specialist in recovery and kinetic therapy, the young lady was healed .

Before 1989 two hotels were occupied by foreigners: the Roman Hotel by the Germans, and the Diana Hotel by the Finns. The Nordic people, because of their climate, were “full” of rheumatism. Finland being a more developed country, the physicians here operated on them performing artificial joint replacement. As a patient, you go, you are subjected to surgery, then you are in convalescence, and you go again to be operated on, and so on and so forth! After being operated on both knees, both elbows and being programmed to be operated on some other joints, a Finnish patient arrived to Herculane Baths. After coming to the resort year after year, the Herculane baths and treatment had a stunning effect on his soft tissues, tendons and cartilages, so he no longer needed a surgery. A German athlete, after finishing his professional career as a performance sportsman, suffered from lumbar herniated disk, pulling his left foot behind him. Surgeons in Germany have recommended him to have an operation. An acquaintance told him not to do surgery while there was another chance, and that chance was the baths from Herculane, Romania. Though he did not believe in the thermal waters, he came to the Herculane Baths resort in a wheelchair and, after the balneal treatment he could stand on his feet again. In the following years, the German tourist returned to baths accompanied by other friends who had been operated for herniated discs and had very acute postoperative pains. The Herculane baths relieved them from their pains grace to the recovery treatment in which the thermal-sulphur procedures worked miraculously.

Good to know:

1. For those who come to the Herculane Baths, the first thing to know is the spring giving the desired thermal water  in order to use it successfully for: rheumatism, paralysis, rheumatic pain of nerves and muscles, back, fractures, dislocations, sprains, bone bumps, open wounds, heavy metal toxicity (lead, mercury, arsenic), cystitis, adnexitis, syphilis, infertility, impotence, diabetes, constipation, gastritis, colitis, hernia, spondylosis, hand or feet arthritis, neuralgia, bronchitis , sinusitis, asthma, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, conjunctivitis, allergic eye infections, headache, hysteria, stress, colds, stomach pain, haemorrhoids, kidney stones, womb pains, spinal cord disorders (spinal sciatica, intercostals neuralgia), hepatitis, flat leg, blocked shoulder, hump, dropped shoulders, prominent abdomen, skin diseases (eczema, acne), obesity, summer sunburn, winter frosting, etc.

2. The waters of Herculane Baths are not beneficial and are contraindicated to: malignant tumours of any kind and any stage, severe bleeding, leukaemia, strong anaemia, myocardial infarction, cardiac insufficiency, ischemic heart disease with seizures, high blood pressure, chronic renal failure, liver cirrhosis, TB, epilepsy, psychiatric disorders, alcohol or drug coma, normal three months’ pregnancy, lactation period and all illness in acute phases.

3. The external cure is done by baths prescribed by the balneologist. The water temperature must be below that of the human body, usually (30-360C), and the duration of a bath is 15-20 minutes. One can choose from total baths (up to the neck in the water), partial baths (up to the waist) for those suffering from heart or for the third age, respectively local baths for certain parts of the body (hands, legs, seats). If the patient enters a balneal crisis (insomnia, rash, anxiety or hyper excitability), the treatment is interrupted for a few days, after which the cure is resumed. The duration of a cure is from two to three weeks (10-21 days) and is repeated three years in a row.

4. Thermal baths have a three-fold effect on the body: mechanical, thermal and chemical. The mechanical action consists in the lifting power of the water that ensures some movements of the body that are impossible to make in the air. Sulphuric thermal water facilitates blood circulation through the veins, slightly increases the activity of the heart and decreases the depth of breath. As a result, if the body is submerged in water up to the throat, there is a feeling of choking. To avoid it, you can pull the body up to the level of the heart and later, after the sensation disappears, you can enter again up to the neck. The thermal action is felt if the water is warmer than 33-36 ° C, meaning that the thermal stabilization zone is exceeded. In this case the skin becomes red, the peripheral veins dilate and the blood circulates more intensely, the heart beats faster, and this can be ascertained by taking the pulse. The chemical action consists in penetrating through the skin some of the minerals from water, mainly sulphur, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium in the form of anions and cations. Due to the complex action of the thermal waters, those who make baths at Herculane, fortify their body physically and regain their mental balance.

5. The internal cure is practiced in parallel with sulphurous baths, with thermal water from Diana III and Neptune II (of stomach), sodium-chloride and sulphurous waters and from Hercules I with predominantly sodium-chloride waters. Hebe Spring will open soon, also for internal cleaning. The cure can be done in any season for 10-21 days. In order to have the expected effect, the water will be drunk directly from the spring half an hour before the meal, sip by sip, drinking as little as possible and in the prescribed dose. The maximum dose can be set in millilitres, by multiplying the body weight by 10 and then dividing it by 3! Start with 50 ml per day and reach the maximum calculated dose. After each dose, you should take either a walk or have a rest on your right side. The drinking water temperature should be around 360 ° C. For respiratory or gynaecological disorders it can be pulverized smoothly and inhaled for 3-6 minutes. Gargle can also be made.

6. Bath and mineral water baths have to be done early in the morning until 12:00 a.m. Take the baths, then rest and then drink water from one of the springs for internal ailments. After lunch, at around 12:00 you can have an hour’s walks around the resort, after which you should rest between 14:00-16:00 hours. In the afternoon, from 16:00 to 19:00 hours, trips can be made on the routes around the resort. [Negrea St., 2002].

Theme Park no. 6. MAN’S REDISCOVERY:

Ana Aslan rejuvenation treatments and Ivatherm’s beauty treatments

With Herculane thermal water
    YOUTH AND BEAUTY

If the past of the Herculane Baths’ thermal waters was linked to the Roman and Austrian emperors, and the present belongs to those who now are trying to restore their health in the spa, the future will belong to the tourists, regardless of age, who want to be forever young and beautiful through the treatments received at the “Ana Aslan” Clinic in Herculane Baths and through the Ivatherm treatments with thermal water from Herculane.

To be forever young does not mean to be 20 years old, it means to remain optimistic, to feel good, to have an ideal in life for which you fight for and conquer”, is the urge of Dr. Academic Ana Aslan, who, 60 years ago, in 1952, prepared Gerovital H3, the miraculous anti – aging product for “eternal youth”.

As soon as the Neptune Baths are renovated, the Ana Aslan Clinic in Herculane Baths will be reopened, offering treatment for skin maintenance and for the effects of aging. Persons over 42 years who began to make wrinkles and their facial muscles got weakened, or wish to treat their neck or neckline, will be rewarded with a nice, much rejuvenated look by the use of geriatric cosmetics.

After a cure of 6 geriatric cosmetic treatments plus lifting wrapping … “you will look young again“.

If you make a cure with Gerovital H3 and Aslavital, under the observation of the clinic’s balneal physician, through revitalizing the body, stopping the aging process and restoring the biological potential … “you will always be young.”

Gerovital from Farmec is a true, successful Romanian brand that has kept its notoriety, the creams being exported worldwide, and celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich, Claudia Cardinale, Jacqueline Kennedy, Charlie Chaplin, Salvador Dali have come to Romania to benefit from “the Gerovital effect”.

Today, Gerovital has been reinvented to adapt to the challenges of the day, but keeps an air of tradition and force in the handwritten signature of Professor Ana Aslan. It is complemented by the Aslavital product range proposed against skin aging for both young and mature women, based on clay – a “living and miraculous earth“.

In addition to the thermo-sulphur springs, there are thermo-saline springs in Herculane Baths, whose water, coming from 2000 meters deep, when reaching the surface, has 45⁰C and it is almost sterile.

Thus, the Herculane thermal water preserves its composition and it is not altered by transport. When I took it to France to study it, I was asked: Are you sure you want this water? Everyone was sceptical. Three months later, they called me and said, “But your water is great! They also told me that it is the best water ever and has anti-inflammatory properties” says Mrs. Rucsandra Hurezeanu, who owns and runs Ivatherm Romania, whose dermal-cosmetic products use the thermal water from Herculane Baths.

Climate change and modern life have resulted in an increase in the sensitivity of everyone’s skin. That is why the main quality of Ivatherm products, unique and so well tolerated by skin, is the calming and anti-irritant effect offered by the Herculane thermal water. It fits all skin types, even for the most sensitive ones. Considered “living water”, the thermo-saline water from Herculane Baths has an average level of mineralization (2.5 g / l), ideal for its use in cosmetics. The Herculane’s thermal – salt water contains Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mg, essential elements for skin health. Its soothing effect is immediate and it is good for all the levels of skin sensitivity, from sensitive to that intolerant or allergic.

The spray with Hercules Thermal Water, an Ivatherm brand, using the purity of “living water” simply brings beauty and comfort every day when the skin is exposed to sunlight, to waxing or removing make-up.

Using the Ivatherm dermo-cosmetic products made in France according to the original formulas containing Herculane thermal water, you will be convinced to come to Romania, to Herculane Baths,  for a two-week stay, to experience the newest benefit of Herculane thermal water, discovered in 2009, the effect of delaying aging.

Besides thermal water treatments, you will be pampered with complementary SPA treatments in Herculane Baths Spa: hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, massotherapy, kinetotherapy, aerosol therapy, silvotherapy and apitherapy.
