DREAMS CARVED IN WOOD

International Marble Sculpture Symposium – Teius, 2012

The Mountainous Banat is unique also for its outdoor museums. If the Outdoor Museum of Steam Locomotives, unique in Europe, can be visited only in Resita, Caransebeș on the other hand is becoming more and more known in the world through the International Sculpture Symposium, held annually, at the end of every summer, for one month.

What is unique for tourists is that all the sculptures made remain in the place they had been created. This is how the Monumental Sculpture Park in Teiuş was created, being built for 7 years between 2003 and 2009, with 33 sculptures of oak wood; this number is considered a symbol of Christianity for Banat, being the age of the Savior Jesus Christ on earth. The dreams chiselled into wood by the sculptors from Romania and abroad, in the camp of Teius, coordinated by the famous sculptor Bata Marianov, can be figured out easily by every visitor of the park. Arriving in front of a sculpture, the tourist is convinced of “evidence” and needs no other words. Impact with the image equates to a unique and unrepeatable reading of this tourist attraction that reveals, fascinates and delights. To look, to contemplate, to feel, in a word, and to perceive the ineffable “here and now”, means to live.

The revelation of the ineffable can be obtained by every tourist who has a cultural initiation in what it means for the Romanians the longing of Brâncuşi and for one of his disciples, the Romanian sculptor Romul Ladea (1901-1970).

The great Constantin Brâncuşi (1876 -1957) “divided the history of art with his wood chipper into two, meaning in two stages: a classic one and a modern one.[PF. Daniel, 2008]

Looking at the modern sculptures from Teius Park, you will see that the works seem to be thought together, and not alone, regardless where the artists come from, with the message:

Today, when the world is in “Change” (2006) and everything is always in “Balance” (2007), look for “Our Bread” (2009) without being like “The Turk and the pistol” (2003) and to grind at each “Interval” (2004) at the “Don Quixote’s Mill” (2003). Give a “Sign” (2004) through a “Shout” (2005) and a “Prayer” (2007) towards the “Blessing Hand”(2003)  of our “Destiny” (2003) in order to raise up on the “Obelisk” (2006). Looking for the cipher through the “Rotating writing” (2006) open the “Gate” (2006) to the “Family” (2006) and “Do not Kill the Children” (2008), born by “Mother Wolf” Dacian song (2003). Only with “The Flower of Teiuş” (2005) you get closer to the essence of the soul, and by simplicity you will get “The crop” (2005) of fulfilment!

Travelling through Banat, the Italian historian Griselini states that the inhabitants here “carve both in wood and stone.” [Griserlini Fr, 1984].

Wood and marble are two wonderful treasures of the Mountainous Banat always calling each man to become the sculptor of his own life, discovering and cultivating unspoken and hidden vocations in the human being. Just like Brâncuşi used to say:

A marble block or a trunk of oak is an artwork in itself. The waters of a marble and the age of a trunk should not be ruined. The digging and cutting must harmonize with the divine lines of the material. It is a sensation of fullness and the joy of living, which complete the man!” [PF. Daniel, 2008]

After seeing the wooden sculptures in the Monumental Sculpture Park from Teius, go to the Caransebeș Square to see the wonderful marble sculptures made at The Marble Sculpture Symposium from Caransebes. In the three annual editions from 2010, 2011 and 2012, coordinated by the sculptor Eugen Petri, 33 marble sculptures from Ruschiţa were created by artists from Asia, Africa, South America and North America, and of course , from Romania.

At each edition participate mature artists, but from the younger generation as well. Each sculptor leaves a part of their talent, their inspiration and soul in the creations that the inhabitants and the visitors of Caransebeș can admire.

Look for these sculptures through the main areas of the city and identify them by according to the message that everyone separately, but in the same time all together, are sending to the people:

From the “Seed” put by the “Bird of the Earth” in “The Memory of the Leaf” will germinate the unleashing of the “Encasement” created by “The Media Globalization” and through the “Wheel of Time” “The Return of Memory” will be produced to the natural “Way of Life” towards the “Mountain Altar”. “Watching our dreams”, let’s discover the nature with other eyes, an “Inner View” with a “Third Eye”, and then we will feel the “Emotion” of the first dance “Tango” on the waters of the “River to Heaven”, having with us the “Dacian Spirit” as a “Protective Sign” of “Integration” in “Permanence” on “The Sun Spiral”!

If you are passing through Caransebeş, visit Teiuş Park, the Gugulans’ recreation place, with ionized air, with lime, acacia or fir scent. The name of the place is given by the lime forests from the slopes of the hills. Look for dairy products and honeycombs that have been the delights of tourists since 1932, when the area of
Timis was declared a climatic resort.
